Standing Desk “Development”

I have always been told “Desk jobs are bad for your health and will make you soft…”, or something along those lines as I usually brushed it off. After seeing an infographic called “Sittin is Killing You“, this time I was more bound and determined to find a solution to sitting and coding all day. For the last couple of months or so, I have been on the search for a standing desk. In the end, all the desks I found either looked cheap and were cheaply made or cost a small fortune to buy and ship. So, I decided to build one myself. Here is what I came up with… all for around $120!

Below are the materials I used to create the standing desk.

  • VIKA BYSKE Adjustable Leg × 2 – IKEA
  • VIKA AMON Table Top – IKEA
  • DIODER Multicolor Lighting Set (w /Chrom Circular Inlays) – IKEA

I also added a few other items to top things off.

  • 3M Knob-Adjust Keyboard Tray with Standard Platform, 17 Inch Track – Amazon.com
  • Vintage Stool – $10 at local thrift store
  • IDEA Paint - The entire back wall is a giant Eraser Board. Very handy…

Hey Luke, it looks like you did a swell job – well done!
Do you feel a big difference using the new desk?

    • Luke McDonald says:

Thanks, Graham. I wouldn’t say I feel a big difference. They main difference for me is I definitely move around more and take more breaks. After your feet get used to standing on them, you hardly notice the difference. In the end, I suppose I have a little more energy, a little more productive (including the breaks), and feel good about what I’m trying to do :)

Looks great! I like the giant white board. What did that run you?

    • Luke McDonald says:

The whiteboard paint cost about $200 (I googled discount codes before I purchased and it saved me $100). It was pretty expensive but I covered an pretty large wall… well worth it in my eyes. There are a number of “Whiteboard” paint solutions out there, but I can back IDEA Paint 100% on it’s effectiveness.

Kudos – everything looks amazing. That whiteboard idea is brilliant, too. I might have to look in to that!

    • Luke McDonald says:

Thanks, it’s a good start. The whiteboard wall is very useful… especially for quickly getting layout ideas and thoughts down right away.

Wow. Pretty nice and effective! I’ve also seen “Sitting is killing you” and try to stand when writing on message boards or when replying mails, but I definitely considering build something like this for permanent usage + chair when necessary :)

    • Luke McDonald says:

It’s also not the best to stand all day either, so yeah, a chair or stool is a good idea and provides a much needed break from time to time. IKEA has some pretty good stools/chairs that are reasonably priced. I’ve also found some “artist” stools out there that are adjustable both in height and angle of the seat.
